I have a Niner Rip carbon fiber full suspension mountain bike, great shocks, great brakes, just a great bike
that I am considering a bafang mid drive conversion. The LBS pointed out that the carbon fiber frame may not handle the added torque for this build and run the risk of busting up the frame. It's a great bike that I don't use so much so I'm so so so temped to convert it and ride the heck out of it but certainly need to concern myself with safety. Anybody have a thought on this?
I would go withe the cyc photon.
looks a legit bike. id recommend against a bbshd and suggest a cyc photon as the current best option. its gonna weigh 4-5 lbs lighter and fit the BB fine, bafang may have issues, dont be fooled by the price, you need a bunch of extra accessories usually at least 200$ worth for bafang kit. its a good motor just heavy as a tank - NOT recommended to have a 14lbs motor kit on a carbon frame in my view, and i found the power a bit overkill for my mtb needs which are somewhat hardcore. another thing about safety - if you wreck hard on a carbon bike w a heavy mid drive, it will likely break/rip off the BB or crack the frame from side flex due to the weight, and the bike is toast. its why we need light mid drives for mtb, the custom mid drive industry has to catch up with the integrated mid drive manufacturers in terms of refined lightweight motors for real mtn biking. heavier motors are better on alloy or steel frames for these reasons.
the photon kit is all inclusive, it has torque sensing and some nice features. hope that helps.
