This is a chain-drive bike with the Nexus hub. Is it possible to convert to a mid-drive? I realize the chain needs to remain parallel to the frame and a friend who has built a few ebikes for himself says it won't work for this bike. He says I need a measurement of very near 51 mm from mid-frame to the chain ring and my bike measures 44 mm. Don't the conversion-kit makers have chain rings to adapt to bikes such as mine? Or is there another reason why a mid-mount motor can't be used with the setup?

Can't get this forum to accept a photo. What you would see is a line drawn from the center of the seat post at the level of the top of the chain ring to the top of the chain ring. I'm told that measurement, in order to use a mid-mounted motor, should be very close to 51 mm. The measurement on my bike is 44 mm. If there were a dish-shaped chain ring of the right size, it could align the chain with the rear sprocket. The dish shape would need to compensate for the 7 mm difference between my bike and the ideal (51 mm) measurement so that the chain remained parallel to the frame.
