Hi, Everyone. I have been considering converting my 2010 Specialized Stumpjumper to an ebike. Did a lot of mountain biking in my younger days. (65 now) and don't use it as much. It is in really good shape and had about $400 worth of replacement maintenance a few years back. It was about $3000 new.
I have a Specialized hybrid which I ride a lot and don't really want to change it.
The stumpy would be used as a commuter, doing some gravel roads and in particular, going up to retrieve my truck after I paraglide. Some of our retrieves are 4-7 km long with elevation gains of 600-1200 meters.
I'd like lots of top speed and a moderate amount of distance from the bike. I've just been introduced to this site in some youtube videos and speeds of over 50 km/hr look very appealing.
I'm curious about doing the conversion myself or just having Johnny do it. I have mechanical experience but if the cost is reasonable, I'd rather haver the warranty and support.
I'm interested in what I might pay either way. Your thoughts on the suitability of this bike to convert. Any other ideas?
How about total weight of a conversion.
I'm trying to add some photos but nothing happens when I click the various buttons. What gives?
I'll try this

stumpy is a good choice, i did it with this yrs model. conversion is not hard, just a bit tome consuming the first time. johnny definitely does them for a reasonable price. you could potentially fit a custom slim battery in the frame, im not sure on that version. bafangs are common motors which are slowly being phased out by better technology coming out. the downside is those motors add 10-14 lbs of wieght, and the battery about 10-15 lbs depending on which one you get. the upside is the bafang is quiet and strong and reliable, youll be able to climb any hill with ease. with a usual 10-12 speed cassette 11-50t ish with a 40-42t front chainring youll be in great shape for climbing. the bbs02 could do what you want for commuting and climbing while being slightly lower weight. the bbshd adds more power at the cost of more weight. other motors are hitting the scene, like the cyc photon which is more ideal than the bafangs currently, less weight for similar power and more compatibility with bikes. if you watch some bafang conversion video guides youll be fine if you want to do it yourself.
