I bought the BBSHD kit and wow it was stupid simple. I thought it wouldn't have a functional brake light. Wrongo. One plug and it all works flawlessly. Rear running light, brake and turn signal are all mixed properly. Sweet.
I don't know about reliability yet, but it's going to make a nice gift, installed on one of my kid's bikes.
Sweet! Perhaps the nicest thing about the Bafang motors IS their reliability. And even if something wears out / breaks on the motor, you should have replacement parts / options available. I've got 3,700 miles on one of my Bafangs, all I've done is grease it once, (probably didn't need to) and yes, it still kicks. There are plenty of vids showing the teardowns / repairs of the motors on youtube and there's always Johnny and Shane to do "live" consultations should you ever need them. When friends are impressed with how I can install a motor, (and I've done some repairs) I tell them they're very simple. WAY simpler than the 1950's - 1960's cars that seemingly Everyone worked on. I predict there's going to be one happy kid in your family. Here's a parts view (from Johnny's website) of a Bafang BBSHD. There are a couple of specialized tools that might be needed, but even then, you may get easily upwards of 5,000 miles without any repair needs at all.
