Hi - I know what you are thinking :) - WHY would you want to switch down a 500-750 or 1000w to 250w - because here in Australia to be street legal we gotta be 250w max !!
Is there a simple way to be able to have some sort of switch to immediately drop to 250w limit that does not involve sitting and reprogramming etc etc.
Want to get this solved before I buy here in Australia.
Thankyou folks for all your assistance. May just have to take the risk :)
Most Bafang BBS02 kits I have installed come with a sticker that says "250 watts" to make them appear legal.
The controller has 9 settings which alter the amperage available to the battery. By calculating 250w, 48v we get 5.2 amps. I have the current showing on my display so you could read the various settings on your bike and use an online calculator and work out what settings keep you legal. But I think that figure would be for peak wattage.
The manufacturers provide a figure much less than peak power - my old Magnum peak was rated at 300w here in NZ, making it road legal here. But in Aus. the same motor is rated 250w and is legal there! A review I read on that bike also said it had peak power around 800w, from memory, so the whole area is very unclear. A company here in NZ has stated for over 5yrs that its 1000w Barfang powered bikes can be used legally on our roads if you don't use that power. I would be very surprised if any of the bikes sold in Aus are 250w max!
Personally, I have a 1000w BBSD on my bike and ride almost exclusively on roads and adopt the attitude of riding safely. On windy, country, roads I believe it is safer for me and others if I am doing 40kph rather than 25kph. If I ride sensibly to the conditions then the power rating is irrelevant.
