I am going through the process of converting my Trek 4300 four series mountain bike. My cabling for my gear shift is partially bare (without the housing) and runs down the seat stay. My question is; Can I just install the gear shift sensor in the middle of the bare cable that has no housing but secure the sensor to the seat stay so it does not move?

I'm with Paul, anywhere along shifting cable.
Update:
I did in fact install the gear shift sensor in the middle of the bare cable. I just secured the sensor to the seat stay. It works perfectly! You just have to make sure the sensor is not moving while shifting gears. I used some double sided tape and two zip ties.
You probably could but I would not recommend it. Is there not a length of the cable running through housing closer to the the derailleur that you can split into two to install the shifter?
