I have a 5 year old Mongoose Malus that I plan on converting to a mid drive (Bafang).. My primary use of this bike will be for hunting and I plan on attaching a trailer to haul large game and gear to and from. I'm 6'3" 300 lbs The bike doesn't have anything stock except for the original ties/wheels and a Tourney derailleur.
It has a Shimano 14/32 freewheel gearset.
My goal is to have a workhorse but also a rider.
My wife has a Fuji MB that we are going to convert later and I would also want to be able to ride with her.. We are in our 50s so we don't need to do 30mph or any ripping of the burms at the ridding park.. 20- 25 mph is plenty of speed for us.
I am aware that there are 3 classes of Ebikes recognized by the Federal government. We will want to be able to ride on National Forrest Rds also,as well Iwill also use my workhorse on private land hunting.
30 mile range should be sufficient as far as battery longevity is concerned.
So now since I laid out my riding/ hauling agenda/needs,
Does anyone have an Idea what I will need besides a 120 bottom bracket Bafang .. what watt motor and battery do I need? Do I need a spacer kit ? Charger? If someone knows the answer where is a great reputable and reasonable place to purchase the items if Jonny Nerdout doesn't have the needed items.
Thanks in advance, David
The throttle is an optional install - it just plugs into the main harness so it is easily added and removed. I'm not aware of a way to throttle down the motor output unless maybe you go the custom programming route for each PAS level. I can't imagine how the Forest Service would ascertain output level of the motor anyway. In fact, the BBS02 motors have decals included that indicate the motor is a 250w (when it is actually rated at 750w).
If that bike has a 120mm bottom bracket, I think you will have to go with the Bafang BBSHD. The Bafang BBS02 only comes in the 68-73mm size. The BBSHD is 1000 watts and will be plenty of power for you. You won't know if you need spacers until you fit the motor and chainring in the bottom bracket and determine how straight the chainline is. You can use spacer to adjust it if necessary. For a battery, you will want either a 48v or 52v battery. The higher the Ah rating, the longer the range. But range will also very significantly by terrain, rider weight, tire size, pedal assist level, throttle usage, etc. I use a 48v 13 ah battery and get 30+ mile range for comparison purposes. You will need a charger, but most batteries will come with one.
