Thanks for providing a place to ask a question. I live in Ontario, Canada. Our politicians have seen fit to limit the legal motor wattage we can have installed on our ebikes to 500 watts. I weigh 270 pounds. Is there a brand (bafang or bosch or other) that says 500 watts on the mfg sticker but can be jerry rigged to deliver more power than 500 watts? Are some motors more powerful than their rating? Looking to build a ebike with (26x4) fat tires if i don't have to push & pull it.

My BBS02 kit (Bafang 750 watts) came with stickers that say 36V 250 watts. I got it from Greenbikekit. I guess the thinking is that not too many police will know how to test your bike for voltage and wattage.
I live in Calgary, and I can share what I did. I checked out Golden Motors in Bolton, which is north of Toronto. They will sell you a 500W motor. I bought the 750W Bafang and 48V battery from John and the Eggrider display. That display enables me to set limits on the motor for two profiles, Road and OffRoad. I have it defaulted to Road and limited to 10amps, so ~480W, and 32km/hr. OffRoad only has a speed limit of 40km/hr, set by my tolerance for road rash. So, on Road I'm technically within the limit and what I notice here is no enforcement at all on the paths and streets. I've used OffRoad and at times the motor was delivering over a kilowatt. I'm closer to John physically and it was several hundred $s cheaper than Golden Motors even with exchange and shipping. My bike is a Specialized Crosstrail, not a fat bike so that is different from what you are looking at.
