Does anyone know what this welded metal adapter holder bracket thing is for? It is under the bottom bracket of my Vitus 29" mountain bike and I am not sure if I can put a bbs02 on it.

Does anyone know what this welded metal adapter holder bracket thing is for? It is under the bottom bracket of my Vitus 29" mountain bike and I am not sure if I can put a bbs02 on it.
It looks like a guard to protect the chain/chainring from rock and stump damage on rough trails.
