I get that Johnny believes mid drives are better but not in all circumstances. My knees are shot and are eligible for replacements but I have been advised by my orthopedic doctor to wait, since mine are in much better shape than most. My knees can't take a lot of pedal pressure so I'm avoiding torque sensors. Are there options I am overlooking? A cadence sensor mid drive? Thanks!

idk i think torque sensors usually are near instant so when you start to press more it alleviates the difficulty, though ive more experience with cadence, bafang bbshd motor. i think both are good and some motors integrate both. mid drives make more sense and are more efficient model than hub motors and dual hub setups you may see. theres so many pros to mid drives over hub, ease of install/maintenance, combine your leg power directly w the motor power on the BB crankset, keeps the weight low and center and off of the wheels. much more engineering possibilities around the BB area vs the space in between the wheel spokes. with a bafang bbshd setup i had it programmed pretty smooth, motor would do about 95% of the work with my legs mostly ghost pedaling, keeping stress off the knees. i had to constantly change the PAS level the adapt to the terrain though, but meh, didnt bug me. new motors like CYC photon i would recommend for you, more lightweight vs a bafang, and similar power better combability. if you dont mind the bike being a heavy spaceship you can go a bafang and battery setup. bafang takes care of all the weight, but then the bike can become more unwieldy, hence more caution riding is advised. some things to consider. hope that helps
