Hi Everyone,
I've recently modified my Trek Dual Sport into an electric bike with a 750w Bafang motor and a 52v 17 1/2 amp battery. I'd like to know when the battery is fully charged; I don't want to leave it on the charger past fully charged. The battery has a single red indicator and 3 green lights. The charger lights up with a red light when I started the charge and it was still red when I removed it. Will the charger indicator light move off the red light when the battery is fully charged?
Thanks so much,
Jim Delano
Yes, the charger will stop charging (red light >out, green light>on) when battery is full. You can check its function with an inexpensive v/ohm meter to make sure. Every ebike owner should have such a meter.
According to the manual that came with my Hailong (48V 17.5A) battery,1Red 3Green =100%, 1Red 2Green = 75% and so on.
You could also mount the batt on your bike and check the voltage level on the controller display.
As a BTW, my manual and various videos I have watched say that if you have put your bike away for the winter, then discharge it to around 75% and store your battery at room temperature.
A second BTW - I have overcharged my battery, so the controller display registers 51.2 V, and all 4 LEDs are green, so I have definitely left the charger on too long, and need to discharge it a bit (not riding in the winter).
I also found this video which advises that if your trips don't need a full battery load, then you can prolong the life of your battery by consistently undercharging it to say around 80%
