I recently built an ebike using the Bafang BBS02 motor and a 52V 17.5 amp battery. I noticed when I start to peddle the the bike lurches ahead as the motor starts to Assisit, is this normal? If not what can I do to make it transisition smother?

I have found that using a max pedal assist setting of 9 really helps lower the initial jolt when the motor assist kicks in. This will give you 9 different power assist levels and the power curve is more linear and much smoother. The drawback is you have to click up to 9 to get max power.
yes its normal, but on stock controller settings. usually are too high, too strong. u will want to learn how to program your controller, its not hard, and setting the parameters for your wheel and battery will be helpful, as well as smoother pedal assist, and u can set a throttle override, and some other settings. check the guides here, you will need a bafang programming cable and windows computer to reprogram it. i recommend the em3ev black profile (which has very smooth pedal assist settigns) - and tweak the settings to match your bike specs.
